A virus is blocking programs and exe files from running. Here's how to fix it. XP, Vista and 7

This can work 2 different ways.

  1. One virus will just intercept processes.
  2. The other virus will actually rewrite file associations and anything you try to open causes the virus to open.`

In order to stream line your fix for the virus. We are putting the steps from easiest to hardest. These steps are made to help fix the issue so that you can run antivirus and other programs again. Remember to run a scan with more than 1 antivirus before you reboot your computer. You can follow this link for a free list of other antivirus software tested and approved by ASG.

Step 1) If you can open your browser. Open it and go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950505    and run the fix it. This will fix the exe file associations and hopefully you can then run your antivirus and destroy the virus.

Step 2) If you still cant open programs try this fix from ASG. Works with XP, Vista and 7. Just download it and run it. Allow changes to your registry when asked. You may get an error in Vista and 7 but ignore it. The programs should work right away. It not, a reboot may be needed. Click here

Step 3) If you can run programs now. Then run your antivirus. Update it. Then scan. Afterwards make sure you scan with at least one more antivirus. You can follow this link for a free list of other antivirus software tested and approved by ASG. All antivirus is 100% free.

Step 4) If you still cant open programs. Try this fix from SuperAntispyware.com. It runs the fix using a cmd file. Here is a link to the webpage. Here is a direct link to the file in case the page is moved.
