Free Botnet Detection and Protection from OpenDNS


OpenDNS has done it again. Now offering Free Botnet detection / protection that is built into OpenDNS's wonderful free DNS service. If you are using OpenDNS you can enable the "botnet protection" feature located in the advanced settings area of your account. Login here

If your not an OpenDNS user, sign up now. Just make sure your follow the instructions for setting up OpenDNS on your computer after signing up. Its very easy to do. Just choose the option below to setup OpenDNS on your personal computer.

OpenDNS gives you the ability to filter your internet (your in control). You can block anything pornagraphy, gambling or even phishing sites. Of course you can block just the Botnets and leave everything else unblocked. ASG recommends you use the features to Blocking Phishing sites, Suspicious Responses and Botnet Protection. Once you have it setup, its all autopilot from there. OpenDNS updates the phishing protection automatically. Not to mention, they update the botnet protection as new threats occur.

If a botnet is found broadcasting on your system, OpenDNS will block it automatically and show you this information in your statistics page (You must enable the botnet protection feature). Login to your account and select Stats on the left sidebar. From there choose Blocked Domains and filter “only domains blocked as malware.” This will generate a list of malware sites your computer and/or network has attempted to make connect with.


OpenDNS blocks the conflicker worm also called Downadup and Kido.

To find out if a Bot has penetrated your network, simply login to your account and select Stats on the left sidebar. From there choose Blocked Domains and filter “only domains blocked as malware.” This will generate a list of malware sites your computer and/or network has attempted to make connect with.
